Watch the Video: iLEAD AV Studio 8th Graders Take Flight

Tapping into our curiosity about flight, iLEAD Student Aerospace Projects’ Soaring Aeronautics Project answers the question “How do things fly?” and introduces learners to the forces described by Newton and Bernoulli.

Through this project, learners use the engineering design process to fabricate and launch their own gliders, interact with a full-scale glider, learn from glider pilots about flight controls and aerodynamics, and fly a glider!

Preflight training on simulators supports the development of flight and navigation skills. The history of flight, anatomy of birds, current experimental gliders, and meteorology are woven in to extend and enhance knowledge, giving meaning to research and writing. To conclude their rigorous Soaring Aeronautics Project, iLEAD AV 8th graders took their first glider flights Saturday, May 4!

Special thanks to iLEAD Student Aerospace Projects and to Skylark North Glider Flight School for guiding and inspiring our learners.

Free to Think, Inspired to Lead: Empowering Learners at iLEAD AV

At iLEAD AV, it is our mission to create a learning environment where students are free to think and inspired to lead.

Throughout your child’s years at iLEAD AV, we will provide many opportunities for them to express their voice and exercise choice in their learning. Our goal is to spark your learner’s curiosity and invite them to use their strengths and increase their capacity to solve real-world problems, work collaboratively with their peers, and present their learning to the community.

As a result, you’ll witness your child enjoying and retaining their academic learning, developing critical and creative thinking skills, becoming adept communicators, and consistently applying what they learn through meaningful action.

We welcome you on this exciting journey as we witness learners becoming confident, capable, and ready to take on the challenges of the world.

Access Your Learner’s CAASPP Score Report

Dear Parent/Guardian:

This spring your child took the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English Language Arts and Math. Learners in grade 5 and 8 also took the California Science Test.

These tests can be combined with other measures like MAP scores, Reports of Progress grades, individual learner work, and facilitator observations to give families and educators a more complete picture of each child’s learning. These results will be used to identify where your child is doing well and where they might need more support. It is important to know that summative test results are not used to determine whether a learner moves to the next grade. Facilitators will use the individual data points to support their learners where needed next year.

You can access your child’s score report through the Pathways parent portal. Not all assessments may have been scored yet, but we anticipate that they should all be completed within the next two weeks.

Your child’s score report will give you information about how well they met the expectations of the grade level and where they are doing well or need more support in each subject. This is helpful information to discuss with your child’s facilitator to understand how they can be better supported and how you can support learning at home.

To learn more about your child’s scores, go to the Starting Smarter website at https://www.ca.startingsmarter.org/. There, you will find information about test results, sample test questions, and free resources to support your child’s learning at home.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact your EF to arrange a conference or get assistance accessing the Pathways Parent Portal.

Sincerely,

The AV Exploration Leadership Team
