Developing Leaders through Project-Based Learning at iLEAD AV Studio

At iLEAD Antelope Valley Studio, a free public TK-8 hybrid charter school program in Lancaster, CA, we believe that every child is a leader. That’s why we’ve integrated Project-Based Learning (PBL) as a cornerstone of our educational approach, fostering an environment where young minds can thrive.

What Is Project-Based Learning (PBL) and How Does It Work?

PBL is a dynamic, student-centered teaching method that moves beyond traditional rote memorization. Instead of simply receiving information, iLEAD students actively gain knowledge and skills by working on real-world problems and challenges for an extended period. It’s about learning by doing, creating, and solving.

We couldn’t agree more with this post from Gillian Berard and Infinity Education Inc. Project-based learning provides an irreplaceable human experience, teaching kids how to learn, be resourceful, tolerate frustration, persevere, take risks, ask critical questions, take action, research, learn new skills, make mistakes, build confidence, reflect, collaborate, and build intrinsic motivation.

Here’s how PBL works at iLEAD Antelope Valley Studio:

“Driving Question” or real-world challenge: Unlike a typical textbook chapter, every PBL unit at iLEAD AV Studio begins with an authentic, complex, and open-ended question or problem. This could be anything from “How can we design a sustainable garden for our community?” to “How can we create a public awareness campaign about local environmental issues?” This question sparks curiosity and provides a clear purpose for learning.

In-depth inquiry and research: Students don’t just jump to solutions. They embark on a journey of inquiry, conducting research, gathering information, and exploring various perspectives related to the driving question. This might involve reading books, interviewing experts, visiting relevant sites, or analyzing data.

Collaboration and critical thinking: Working in teams, students collaborate to brainstorm ideas, analyze information, and critically evaluate potential solutions. They learn to communicate effectively, listen to different viewpoints, and build upon each other’s strengths. This process develops essential skills like problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork.

Creating a product or solution: The core of PBL is the creation of a meaningful, public product or solution that addresses the driving question. This isn’t just a poster or a worksheet; it could be a science experiment, a community service initiative, a documentary film, a business plan, a functional prototype, or a persuasive presentation. This product is the vehicle for deep learning, requiring students to apply what they’ve learned in a practical way.

Iteration and feedback: Throughout the project, students receive ongoing feedback from their highly skilled educators, whose role is to facilitate, not just lecture, and often from peers and even community experts. This feedback loop allows them to refine their ideas, improve their work, and deepen their understanding.

Public presentation and reflection: At the conclusion of a project, our students don’t just turn in their work. They proudly demonstrate their learning and present their projects to their families and the wider community. This public exhibition reinforces the skills they’ve learned, builds confidence, and allows them to see the real-world impact of their efforts. They also reflect on their learning journey, identifying what went well, what challenges they faced, and what they would do differently next time.

Through this immersive process, iLEAD Antelope Valley Studio ensures that learning is dynamic, engaging, and connected to the real world. Our students — inspired learners — not only develop foundational skills in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science, but they also apply the power of research, critical thinking, and collaboration to real-world challenges.

We are honored to support our young learners and leaders on their path to lifelong learning and making impactful contributions to our world.

International Day of Play 2025: Celebrating the Power of Play at iLEAD AV Exploration

Join us in celebrating International Day of Play on June 11!

After decades of research, the evidence keeps building that the best way for children to learn and thrive is through play. Play is crucial for healthy brain development. Play gives children space to create while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength.

At iLEAD AV Exploration, we make room for play as an essential part of our approach to education because we know it is required for every child’s healthy development.

With summer upon us, we encourage families to intentionally create time and space for children to play freely, whether exploring nature, engaging in imaginative games, or simply enjoying unstructured downtime, as we did together on Friday at our Summer Kickoff Celebration!

Play shapes well-rounded, resilient, and thriving individuals — and not just children but grown-ups too. When we play, we’re not just having fun; we’re building the foundation for a brighter future. We hope you have a happy Day of Play!

Reimagining Education: How Charter Schools Like iLEAD AV Exploration Are Leading the Way

Parents, do you dream of a learning environment where your child thrives, where their unique talents are nurtured through personalized, relationship-driven learning, and where an exciting adventure awaits? Imagine a school whose mission is aligned to its methodology, committed to empowering individuals to grow and lead. That’s what we strive to be at iLEAD AV Exploration, a free public TK-8 charter school program of iLEAD Hybrid, offering independent study facilitated by caring and credentialed teachers.

What is a charter school, and how is it different from other public schools?

Public schools provide a vital foundation for millions of students across the nation, ensuring every child has access to quality education. When a student thrives in an educational environment different from what a traditional public school can provide, that’s where public charter schools come in. Charter schools are tuition free and open to all students, and they are held to rigorous public accountability standards.

The Vision Behind California’s Charter Schools Act

California’s Charter Schools Act of 1992 was a landmark piece of legislation. It was designed to give teachers, parents, students, and community members the freedom to establish and maintain schools that operate independently from traditional school districts. This independence serves several crucial purposes, all aimed at enhancing and diversifying our public education system. Among those purposes are the following:

  • Encouraging innovation: Charter schools stimulate innovation across all public schools.
  • Expanding choices for families: Charter schools provide parents and students with more options within the public school system.
  • Improving student learning: Charter schools enhance educational opportunities and outcomes for students.
  • Creating professional opportunities for teachers: Charter schools empower teachers to take ownership of the learning program at their school sites.

iLEAD AV Exploration: A Commitment to Personalized Public School

iLEAD AV Exploration, a free public charter school independent study program with a studio space in Lancaster, CA, embraces the intent of the California Charter Schools Act. As a California nonprofit public benefit corporation, iLEAD Hybrid provides a voluntary public educational choice for families with learners. The program is dedicated to offering an alternative learning environment that prioritizes individual needs within the public school framework.

What Makes iLEAD AV Exploration Unique?

iLEAD AV Exploration provides quality educational instruction, curricular support, and carefully selected resource materials. Our goal is to ensure learners make appropriate progress toward achieving school-wide outcomes based on the Common Core State Standards. The iLEAD AV Exploration model is designed to provide a hands-on, developmentally appropriate, and personalized educational experience – an experience often sought in private schools, but made accessible and tuition-free for all families.

At iLEAD AV Exploration, the approach centers on the whole child, recognizing each learner’s unique needs, talents, interests, and goals. Students are in the driver’s seat of their own education, guided by competent, caring, and credentialed educators. This “guide on the side” philosophy, rather than a “sage on the stage” approach, encourages deeper learning through self-directed exploration in a developmentally appropriate environment.

A Personalized Approach for Every Learner

iLEAD AV Exploration’s commitment to personalization is evident in our Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs), developed for each student to guide their learning journey annually. We also provide comprehensive support from our staff for learners, including special education, English learning, and opportunities for high-achieving students. Rather than expecting each learner to conform to one way of learning, our tailored approach ensures an instructional fit that is just right for every child.

All TK-8 learners at iLEAD AV Exploration have access to a rigorous, standards-based course of study that encourages deeper thinking through the following methods:

  • Self-directed learning: Learners take age-appropriate responsibility and exercise autonomy in their daily activities.
  • Engaging, constructivist, and project-based learning: This incorporates the arts, technology, world languages, and health and fitness.
  • Support for social-emotional development: Recognizing the importance of holistic growth, we emphasize social-emotional development as part of our regular curriculum.

iLEAD AV Exploration aims to provide an exceptional academic program that empowers learners and their families and fosters continuous improvement in public education. We offer diverse and personalized pathways for all of our students to succeed. Our goal is to provide the best of what an individualized educational approach can offer for every learner, without the financial barrier of private school tuition. It is our privilege and honor to work alongside families to support the learning and leadership potential of every child enrolled at iLEAD AV Exploration, and we thank you for being a part of this exciting journey.
