iLEAD AV Studio 8th Graders Take Flight

iLEAD AV 8th graders took their first glider flights Saturday, May 4!

Tapping into our curiosity about flight, iLEAD Student Aerospace Projects’ Soaring Aeronautics Project answers the question “How do things fly?” and introduces learners to the forces described by Newton and Bernoulli.

Through this project, learners use the engineering design process to fabricate and launch their own gliders, interact with a full-scale glider, learn from glider pilots about flight controls and aerodynamics, and fly a glider!

Preflight training on simulators supports the development of flight and navigation skills. The history of flight, anatomy of birds, current experimental gliders, and meteorology are woven in to extend and enhance knowledge, giving meaning to research and writing.

Special thanks to iLEAD Student Aerospace Projects and to Skylark North Glider Flight School for guiding and inspiring our learners!

California State Testing (CAASPP Testing) Continues through May 17

Continuing through May 17, we are conducting our California State Testing for grades 3-8. You will have the option for your child(ren) completing testing either in person (on site) or virtually (at home).

  • In-person testing will take place on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of those weeks.
  • Virtual testing will take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each of those weeks.

In Person:

  • Tuesday, May 14 (Math CAT)
  • Thursday, May 16 (Math PT)
  • Friday, May 17 (All makeups)

Virtual:

  • Monday, May 13 (Math CAT)
  • Wednesday, May 15 (Math PT)
  • Friday, May 17 (All Makeups)

Due to the crucial importance of learners taking their time and doing their best work, learners will be able to complete only one test per day. Each test is estimated to take about one to two hours to complete when done thoroughly and completely. If your child is testing on site, please be available to pick up your learner as soon as they finish testing. Learners should bring something quiet to do when they are done and should bring their own headphones, if possible.

If you opt to have your child complete their state test at home, the following guidelines need to be followed:

  • Learner must be free from all distractions and in a separate and quiet room
  • There must be NO interruptions throughout the duration of the test
  • Their camera will remain ON at all times (there is no ability to turn off camera on the secure browser testing platform)
  • Home internet must be reliable/strong

Please fill out this form indicating whether your child(ren) will be testing at home or in person. This will help us plan accordingly for your child’s testing schedule.

If special education learners will miss SAI sessions due to testing, please let Mrs. Neely know.

Lastly, please read over the attached parent letter regarding state testing.

CAASPP Testing for 3rd-8th Grades: May 13-17

Every year, California students participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). When combined with other measures, such as grades, class work, and teacher observations, these tests give families and teachers a more complete picture of their child’s learning. Your child will take the following tests, depending on their grade level or instructional program:

  • Required for grades 3-8: Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and Math.
  • Required for grades 5-8: California Science Test (CAST).

The Smarter Balanced Assessments are computer-based, and the California Common Core State Standards are tested.

The testing window is May 13-17, 2024.

You are an important part of your child’s education. To make sure your child feels comfortable taking tests, you can do the following:

  • Explain to your child that these tests are tools to help them learn and that they should not be anxious or scared.
  • Explore the practice tests with your child so they can become familiar with the platform and setup of the tests.
  • Remind your child that you and their facilitator want them to try their best and are there to help every step of the way.

You will receive your child’s results at or before the beginning of the next school year. The results will identify where your child is doing well or needs more help so you can better support their learning at home and facilitators can better support their learning in the classroom.
