iLEAD AV Highlights of the Week

Before the break, our learners had an opportunity to demonstrate their learning at Presentations of Learning. They also had several more opportunities for fun! See the highlights below!

2nd grade Presentation of Learning

Mrs. Ross’s 2nd grade Presentation of Learning (POL) was about the world around us. Learners spent time looking at and experiencing the school community around them and then capturing that on film. They learned about camera parts, how they work, and how to take a visually pleasing picture. They also learned about different types of soil, rocks, weather patterns, and how plants grow.

3rd grade POL

Mr. Ortega’s 3rd grade Presentation of Learning was on the history of the Antelope Valley and how it has changed over the last 500 years.

5th grade POL

The 5th grade learners worked on their researching skills and organized a five-paragraph research paper that informs readers about animals and the ecosystem. They made art pieces that required the learners to engage and inform their audience.

6th grade POL

Mr. Z and Mr. White’s 6th grade class had a college fair for their Presentation of Learning. They learned and showed us how they can use higher education to change or improve their family legacy.

Kindergarten met one of Santa’s helpers!

7th grade built gingerbread houses!

Staff Party

Our staff members also had a chance to meet and celebrate the holidays!

We’re looking forward to so much more fun, collaboration, and growing together as lifelong learners this spring semester!

Exploring iLEAD Antelope Valley Culture: The 7 Habits

Happy New Year! We hope your 2020 is off to a good start. As we head into the second half of the school year, we’re happy to introduce a new series of articles in the Monday Message, aimed at unpacking some of the essentials of the iLEAD Antelope Valley educational model.

Our educational model is driven by much more than simply making sure children are good students. Rather, it’s focused on equipping them to be lifelong learners who are fully developed and prepared to lead in the 21st century.

Whether you’ve been part of the iLEAD Antelope Valley family for a while or are fairly new, you’ve most likely heard a lot of talk about “The 7 Habits” and how important they are to what we do. Stephen Covey’s best-selling The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has been deeply influential in the shaping of the iLEAD approach to project-based learning, as well as our staff development. We are constantly inspired by how we see our learners put the 7 Habits into action.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll expand on each of the habits, how they relate to learning at iLEAD Antelope Valley, and even practical ways you can incorporate them into your daily life.

To get things started, though, we wanted to take today to introduce the 7 Habits.

  • Habit 1: Be Proactive: Being proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. Proactive people focus their time and energy on things they can control instead of reacting to or worrying about conditions over which they have little or no control.
  • Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind: At the heart of this is beginning each day, task, or project with a clear vision of one’s desired direction and destination, and then continuing by flexing proactive muscles to make things happen.
  • Habit 3: Put First Things First: This is where Habits 1 and 2 come together. It happens day in and day out, moment by moment, and deals with many of the questions addressed in the field of time management. Habit 3 is about life management, as well — your purpose, values, roles, and priorities.
  • Habit 4: Think Win-Win: This habit presents life as a cooperative arena, not a competitive one. Win-win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. A win-win approach means agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfying.
  • Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then Be Understood: This habit can help transform communication. Too often, many of us can listen with the intent to reply, not to understand. We can filter everything we hear through our life experiences and our frame of reference. Consequently, we decide prematurely what the other person means before they finish communicating.
  • Habit 6: Synergize: This is the habit of creative cooperation. It’s a process of teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. It thrives on the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
  • Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw: Living a life in balance means taking the necessary time to renew yourself. To “sharpen the saw” means to preserve and enhance the greatest asset you have — you. It means having a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual.

Coming up next week, we’ll dive into the first habit, Be Proactive, discussing what it looks like in practical terms and how you can make it part of your life.

Our Goals

Our planning and preparation are consistent with our three Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) goals. We’re looking forward to sharing how we’re meeting each goal throughout the school year, and we’ve listed the goals below:

Goal 1: Provide optimal conditions of learning through providing basic services, implementation of California State Standards, and access to an academic and educational program.

Goal 2: Provide all learners with a rigorous, creative, and broad curriculum to maximize academic achievement and college and career readiness.

Goal 3: Generate active engagement between parents/families and the school and connections with the community to promote learner achievement and communication among all stakeholders.

Breakfast and Lunch at iLEAD AV: Menu and Helpful Info

Menu: Please see below for the current menu. Note: no lunch on Fridays.

Breakfast Schedule: Breakfast is served from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. only.

Packed Lunch Guideline: Parents, please send your learners with a lunch that does not need to be warmed up. We are unable to warm or heat up food or give hot water to the learners. This is a safety issue, and we appreciate your cooperation.

Free & Reduced Meal Applications: Please submit your free/reduced lunch application to the front office as soon as possible. Lunch balances must remain under $20 this school year. Please make payments in the front office.

Prices: Learners who do not qualify for free or reduced-price meals must pay $3 for lunch and $2 for breakfast.

Pay for Lunches Online: iLEAD AV has partnered with My MealTime, a fast, secure online service for making credit or debit card deposits and monitoring your learner’s lunch account. Download the mobile app!

Health and Wellness Policy: Our learners are active and exerting energy outside, so they need nutritious refreshments, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and as much water as possible. We’d like to share with you our Health and Wellness Policy as a helpful reference and to support you and your learner in making good food choices for nourishing the body and mind.

Keeping the Valet Process Moving

Dear iLEAD AV families,

Please take time to review our valet process for drop-off and pick-up.

  1. In the mornings, the valet gate opens at 8:00 a.m.
  2. In the afternoon, the valet gate opens at 3:00 p.m.
  3. Many of you requested the opportunity to walk on-site to pick up your learners in the afternoon. Please park on 22nd Street West, walk onto the valet lot using the exit gate, and present your valet card. You will be able to walk to the classroom to pick up your learner/learners.
  4. Please remember the valet traffic flow pattern. There are no left turns to enter or exit the lot.
  5. To help us continue to be good neighbors, please do not block the driveways for Miller Elementary School or KinderCare on 22nd St. West. To assist us with that, our leadership and maintenance teams have designed a new flow pattern to get more of our parents inside the valet area.

Pickup is from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. Learners who have not been retrieved by 4:00 p.m. will go to Extended Care, and accounts will be billed at $3 per hour per learner.

Additional Procedures

The owner of the shopping center asked all parents and staff to stop parking there and posted signs warning us that cars would be towed, so that is no longer an option.

We are using our lot on 22nd Street West for valet before and after school. The lot is very large.  As a result, we no longer have valet in front of the school.

To access the lot, please turn right on K-4 from 20th Street West. You will pass Miller Elementary School, drive right around the bend, and make a right into our lot. At the start of the day, your learner will be greeted and escorted onto campus.  At the end of the day, your learner will be summoned and escorted to your car. Please be sure to post your valet card on the dashboard daily. Once your learner is safely in your car, you will exit the lot and make a right, which will take you to Avenue K. We will have cones, signs, and iLEAD team members on standby to support you and the learners.

In the mornings, the valet lot will open at 8:00 a.m. In the afternoon, it will open at 3:00 p.m. for dismissal. If you are walking your learner to class in the morning, we will have a parking area in the lot just for you.
